Description

Philly Bongoley Lutaaya (1951–1989) was a pioneering Ugandan musician and songwriter, remembered as one of the nation’s greatest cultural icons. He rose to fame in the 1970s and 1980s with timeless hits like Born in Africa, blending Afro-pop with heartfelt storytelling. Beyond music, Lutaaya made history as the first prominent Ugandan to openly declare his HIV/AIDS status, using his platform to fight stigma and raise awareness during a time of silence. His bravery transformed public dialogue on the disease. Though his life was cut short, Lutaaya’s music and advocacy remain an enduring legacy in Uganda and beyond.
